Pure Nail and Cuticle Oil - 3 Day Challenge Results

So you may have seen my first post about the challenge here. If not then basically on Sunday night I started a 3 day 'Let's Get Naked' challenge using the Pure Oil from Simple Nail Art Tips. This challenge involved keeping your nails bare for a total of 3 days and applying the oil frequently throughout the day in order to hydrate them.

If you didn't see the other post then before you continue please have a look at it here. Basicallly, my nails are generally pretty good but the main problem I have tend to be related to brittleness. I often get the corners cracking off my nails because they are brittle, now I don't expect that to be solved in 3 days (I will continue using the oil and update you about that in a month), so what difference can 3 days make?

You need to take a look at the pictures below. When using this oil I applied it as directed, just slopping it on the nails and surrounding skin and when it was absorbed doing that again. I wasn't pedantic about this and I have a job where I can't keep the oil on all the time, so for an afternoon and a whole day of this challenge I had to continually wash my hands (I work in healthcare), so I was probably a bit of a brutal challenger.

Now, just so you know, I do look after my hands. I use Lush Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter which I really like twice a day most days and then the odd bit of CND Solar oil here and there, as well as hand cream as often as I can, so I am no stranger to cuticle oils etc. I thought because of this I might not get as much of a result as some other ladies who might not do this as religiously as I do. I do tend to have very dry skin though that is certainly a factor against me and something that probably contributes to the brittleness of my nails.

So let's take a look at my results......

AFTER:
This is after the 3 days. Take a look at the before picture below. You can see the dryness has gone and those little scratches on the nail have disappeared. I also lost the broken bit of nail that the patch was holding on the index finger, but that's ok, it was bound to happen.

AFTER:
Again, after the 3 days. Pay particular attention to the cuticles on the middle and ring fingers.

BEFORE:

AFTER: Yes there is some cuticle which need to be pushed back. I didn't want to do that before these pictures so I could show you the results 'untouched'. The day after I took the photo under this one (start of the challenge) that bit of dry skin you can see sticking up was really sore and inflamed. Within a day it was totally gone. I don't know how but it was.

AFTER: OK, so here I had a break really low down on the nail. Ouch, they hurt and I get them quite often. I can usually keep them going until the nail grows up enough for me to file by using some nail glue or a patch. You can see a little nail glue around that split, but funnily enough it has come off the actual split itself (typical!). I can barely notice the split on my nail anymore.

BEFORE: It was really dry and I thought it was going to catch on something and rip across. I think this may be one of the areas with the most noticable improvement to the nail. I am really impressed with this one.

AFTER: Look at the photo before, all that dry skin has gone. You can see I need to push the cuticle back, for some reason this one grows that fastest. Even the texture of the skin has changed.

Now, there is one more thing that I would like to mention that I don't have photographs to show. Do you ever get the skin on the inside of the fingernail growing up with the nail? I do. It's really weird and I only get it on certain nails. If you look very carefully at the nail line on my first photograph in this post you can see that some of them are almost a V shape, particularly the middle and ring fingers, that is the attached bit of skin on the other side shining through the nail. This bit of skin is really hard to deal with, because it is really sensitive and hard to push back. Years ago when I used to have acrylics on they used to use the little drill on these and they would be gone (yuck!). Well, the reason I am talking about these is that I have been putting the oil on the underside of the nail too and it has really softened these bits of skin so that I can gently push them back. They are not completely gone right now but I am working on them which is quite a relief.

So, at the end of this challenge what do I think? To be honest I was hoping for a miracle but not expecting much, I have used OPI and CND cuticle oils and we all know they are good quality, also I dodn't think my nails were in too bad a shape to start with. Well, I am very impressed with Pure Nail and Cuticle Oil I have to say. I really like it, it feels less thick and sticky than other oils I have tried and it has a pleasant scent, but the thing that has made the difference is that it sinks in quite easily, it almost has a finer texture if that's possible. I am really pleased with the results and I am going to continue using this oil several times a day when I am wearing polish. My job dictates that most weeks I have at least 2 days naked so those will be good for me to work on my nails with this oil too.

I really like these short term results but I am even more interested to see what happens to the nail as it grows out while I'm using this oil. What I am hoping for is less brittleness and hopefully less curling on specifically the index fingers, as these are the most brittle. I don't know if that is possible but I will be updating you in a month as to my progress.

In case you were wondering how much oil I used up in the challenge I thought I would show you. I used mainly the bottle as it was just easy for me. Now, for 2 days I applied it really liberally to the whole of my finger, right up to the knuckle on my hand. Ana at Simple Nail Art Techniques doesn't tell you to do this but my skin was so dry I wanted to. Also I took this picture after I had been using the oil for 4 and a half days (the other photo's were at exactly 3 days), so this is more than 3 days worth. I would imagine with normal use it would last at least a couple of months.

If you would like more information then please take a look here. A starter kit is $24 with free domestic shipping which I think is a pretty good deal. The only sad thing is that if you are international the shipping is pretty high now since USPS changed their rates last week. It might work out cheaper to club together with a few friends and do a group order to split shipping.

As I said I will be posting updates about my use of this oil so keep an eye out.

  1. Looks like you've had some really great results.

I just wanted to say, where the skin grows up underneath the nail, I've found that using cuticle remover on that is good. It brings the skin away from the nail, making it easier to push down and less tender in my experience.

  3. This made a massive difference to your already beautiful nails. I also get curling on my thumbs and pointer fingers, I also get the skin growing under some of my nails, mainly my index and pointer fingers. It's a shame the shipping is high for this product. Do you know of anything as good from the UK?

I have a nail page on Facebook, I wear mainly soak off gels but your swatches have helped me choose some OPI polishes recently. It's called simply into my nails. It's always lovely to find other bloggers in the UK.

    Do

Thanks so much for commenting. I took off the annoying verification thing so I thought I better add some moderation to avoid spam messages, you know what the internet is like!

Anyway, it's great to get comments and I'll verify them as soon as they get to me.
